Anita Desoto

My work is reinterpretation and reappropriation of old masters to tell a story that belongs to women. For this painting I looked to the Rococo era for its visual celebration of the ultra feminine. But often figures in Art that are feminine are called the virtue's like Peace and justice as in the original work by Corrado. Not real women with real lives.

The Rococo was also an era far from peaceful. The time of the French revolution. A world at Peace is something many of us have on our minds today.

My contemporary paint application creates a dialogue between the past and the present. I like to make some of my female figures look androgenous to undo old binarys.

I have also been thinking a great deal about our need for more women leaders in our world.
